Urban Gorillas is an NGO based in Nicosia, Cyprus that is run by a multi-disciplinary team of urban enthusiasts who envision healthy and socially inclusive cities. We came together in 2013 to create projects and actions that bring new energy and inspire change in city spaces.

Our Mission: Activating urban spaces and transforming them into lively and creative hubs that encourage sustainable living and citizen participation.

Our Vision: Creative, healthy, sustainable and socially inclusive cities.

Formed out of the need to develop the use of public space in our local context, Urban Gorillas have so far, among other smaller scale initiatives, successfully run an 18-month project with funding from the EEA Grants / Norway Grants. The project included the organisation of specialised workshops, designing and building site-specific temporary structures, running an open call and hosting a series of artistic and cultural events in public spaces in cities throughout Cyprus. Please visit our website for more details about the project and activities we have realised to date: http://www.urbangorillas.org.

With our experienced team, vision and diverse network throughout Cyprus and internationally, these are some of the areas of expertise our organisation can contribute to a partnership project under:
    – proven ability to run a grant project from conceptualisation through to full implementation, including all aspects of project coordination, project management, design and production of creative collateral, communications and dissemination
    – successful organisation of workshops and lectures with internationally invited specialists in their fields; curation of exhibitions and larger scale events with multiple participants, including interventions and installations in public spaces throughout Nicosia and Cyprus
    – development and creation of research study and dissemination of results through local and international conferences and publications
    – Cyprus-wide and international network
    – unique perspective and experience from a divided capital of an island nation in the Mediterranean with European and Middle Eastern influences, as well as working in a divided city where rich cultural heritage meets a modern urban landscape

Additionally we have recently launched a custom-designed and developed interactive online platform via our website that offers the opportunity to explore its use and application in any city, country or region, for example for mapping, surveys and public dialogue on a given topic or geographic location.

Possible areas and means of collaboration could include but are not limited to:
    – urban regeneration and use of public space through participatory (bottom-up) initiatives that engage the community
    – contributing to multicultural and intercultural dialogue through creative and artistic initiatives
    – activating ‘dead’ spaces in the city and empowering city dwellers to reclaim and question issues around the use of public space
    – artistic and cultural projects and production realised through sharing of ideas, perspectives, exchange, learning and collaboration
    – exploring themes of space, ‘place and non-place’, memory, layers of memory and history, multi-perspective views of spaces and objects and our associations with them
    – contributing to sustainable lifestyles including greener urban living and smart cities and exploring innovative concepts and means
    – exploring and expanding the role of art and the artist in urban areas while pushing the boundaries on creativity and innovation in our present lives and needs as urban dwellers
    – developing, organising and / or hosting events, workshops, training sessions, round-tables, conferences around given themes and topics

We welcome proposals for collaboration and look forward to hearing from you.

    Dear Colleagues,

We would like to indicate our interest to study the possibility of becoming a Portuguese partner of your consortium.
Established 1984, the “Departamento do Património Histórico e Artístico da Diocese de Beja” [DPHA] (Department of Historical and Artistic heritage, Catholic Diocesis of Beja) is a pioneer ONG, operating with national, regional and local authorities, in safeguarding the religious heritage. In particular, it is in charge of the cultural heritage of the Beja region, in the South of Portugal, between the Atlantic ocean and the Spanish border. The Diocese of Beja keeps over 200.000 inventoried works of art in churches, monasteries, convents and museums and over 500 buildings.
Among the many areas of work of his team, 12 professional and 214 volunteers, are: inventory of religious cultural goods; ensuring equity for communities and social inclusion; creation of a core of technical advice; churches restoration and re-opening; support for cultural itineraries.
The experience of Beja is particularly relevant in inventories, conservation, publications and development of local communities. The DPHA chose to enlarge its range of activities on heritage and biodiversity in order to involve a wider public. In addition, organizes since 2003 the Festival Terras sem Sombra (FTSS), which aims to become accessible the monuments of Alentejo. This is due to a partnership between the DPHA as well the “dynamic forces” of Alentejo.
The FTSS has an itinerant character and focuses its action on the developing of new audiences and the connection to local communities. Its high international level of the programme is composed by, beyond concerts, master classes, conferences, guides tours and some pedagogic artistic actions. The dialog between the past and the contemporary creation, as well as the opening to young composers and interpreters, the order for works, the intersections among the arts, the rescue of the musicological heritage, are, together, structural elements of the project.
This is the background in which the FTSS shows the relevance of the environmental and cultural value of this territory, presenting one of the best index of preservation in Europe. Each concert is accompanied by a volunteering pilot-action in order to save its biodiversity. The principles of inclusion and sustainability are an integral part of the rules of the FTSS. The concerts and other activities provide open access within the constraints imposed by the preservation of the monuments and the place visited as well.
The “Festival Terras sem Sombra” desires to persuade the whole community to join efforts to obtain a well-balanced and sustained development for Southern Europe.
The International Prize “Terras sem Sombra”, created by the Festival in 2011, is awarded annually to three personalities or institutions that stood out, globally, in the areas of music, cultural heritage and biodiversity preservation.
    Best regards,

    José António Falcão

We are a research team based in Faro, Algarve, Portugal, who is willing to submit a Med application. From your information we gathered our project could meet your interests. Please send some quick feed back if you wish further information.
    Project description:
Starting from the lifestyle and features of Mediterranean diet, this project aims to implement a program of hands-on training in healthy cooking in order to amplify the beneficial effects of healthy eating and basic cooking techniques in the adoption of a health promoter food pattern.
The model will be replicated for training of trainers, nutritionists/dieticians trainees, with the production of the training manual, with recipes and grocery list, incorporating the food traditions of each region.
The dissemination and promotion of the training programme in each region creates employment and contributes to the healthy lifestyle of actors (trainers and target audience).
