Municipality of Alimos is located in Attica region in Greece. It is situated on the Saronic Gulf coast, 8 km south of the Athens city center and has a population approaching 50.000 inhabitants. Alimos covers an area of 7.5 sq. kilometers. The total area of its coastal zone is 350.000 sq. m.

    Significant geopolitical & tourism position

The Mediterranean region is the leading tourist destination in terms of international and domestic tourism. Around one-third of all international tourists arrive in the Mediterranean, making it the world’s most visited region. Tourism is mainly concentrated in the coastal areas which receive 30% of international tourist arrivals. The most widely used tourism development model is based on seaside summer holidays and the attainment of quantitative goals. As a result, tourism is a major pillar of Mediterranean economies.
Alimos has the largest marina in Greece, and the southeast Mediterranean also, with a total land area of 171.030 sq. m., which includes a marine area of 250.000 sq. m., breakwaters of 1.170 m. length and more than 1.100 fixed vessels sites. So, it is a doubtless fact that Alimos could play a key role in the growth, competitiveness and sustainability of the coastal & marine time tourism in the Mediterranean.

    Economic – service sector

In Alimos, the labor market is constantly expanding with the dominance of the tertiary economic sector and the service sector, which have beneficial effects in supporting and developing tourism and maintaining low unemployment rates compared with other neighboring areas. Considering the demographic composition of Alimos, the high rate of productive ages should be mentioned. This is undoubtedly a dynamic element. Finally, the productive activities in the Municipality of Alimos are characterized by the clear dominance of the trade sector, with a percentage of 20% of employees in relation to the total employed inhabitants in the tertiary sector.

    Actions towards low carbon economy

Alimos implements an Action Plan regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions, described by the “Covenant of Mayors”, and plans the strategy for limiting the effects of climate change at a local level. Moreover, Alimos is drafting a strategic plan in order to limit the effects of climate change, in accordance with the European Initiative “Mayors Adapt”. Regarding the RES, the Municipality is exploring the possibility of utilizing them so as to cover the energy needs of the local swimming pool and other sports facilities. Finally, as far as sustainable urban transport is concerned, Alimos makes all efforts towards utilizing RES in local transport.

    Previous experience in European projects

The Municipality of Alimos over the past couple of years has made significant efforts in participating in European projects, implementing action plans and benefiting from the results. Specifically, the above mentioned points are of key importance for the Municipality. Moreover, Alimos has in its potential highly educated and experienced officers and professionals who are able to implement projects and deliver results in a timely manner.
Some of the previous European projects that Alimos has participated in:

    1. The European project CERTUS, which objective is shaping and promoting innovative funding solutions for the renovation/ retrofitting of municipal buildings towards the zero carbon footprint goals in accordance with the relevant European Directive. The specific project was approved and funded by the EU, through the programme “Smart Energy for Europe”.
