Project title: Conservation of natural ecosystems and enhancing its economic value for supporting sustainable use of regional resources and enhancement of ecosystem services
    Acronym: Eco2MED
Partners already involved: Slovenia: the Škocjan Caves Regional Park, Municipality Hrpelje-Kozina, Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, Greece: European Regional Framework for Co-operation (ERFC)
Type of partner that we are looking for: Coastal, marine and wetland protected areas with emphasis on endangered and/or N2k species and habitats.
Also, institutional, operational and scientific local stakeholders, but only in connection with above mentioned types of protected areas
Programme priority axis: PRIORITY AXIS 3: Protecting and promoting Mediterranean natural and cultural resources
Programme priority axis specific objective: To maintain biodiversity and natural ecosystems through strengthening the management and networking of protected areas
    Type of project (module): M1+M2

    Issue addressed:
The project aim is to connect protected areas and other regional partners to strengthen protection of natural ecosystems (e.g. orchards, olive groves, salt pans, etc.) by enhancing its economic value and reduction of the impact of human activities in a way that would support sustainable use of regional resources and conservation of ecosystem services.
Project activities will be oriented to knowledge transfer, networking, better coordination and sharing of interdisciplinary approaches.
In Slovenia the special emphasis would be on fruit orchards with activities such as inventories and restoration of orchards, analyses and case studies, harmonisation of management approaches and developing concepts for preservation of cultural and natural values, awareness raising, etc.
However, in other areas there could be different possible project objects, for instance olive groves, vineyards or any other measures concerning local needs or the current status of an area in support of habitats and biodiversity, especially endangered and/or N2k species and habitats.

    Dear Renata,

We are Ivana Miskovic and Zdravko Markov, and we work in the Office of the Prime Minister of Herzegbosnian County in Livno (Canton 10), Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the area of our County is the Livno field. Very conserved habitat for wetland birds as well as the number and composition of the avifauna gave incentive to the proclamation of Livno field Ramsar
site of international importance. A few years ago, this field was declared a Ramsar site with an area of 45,868 ha and is the largest of the three declared Ramsar sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We in the Government of our County want to do evaluation and zoning of the Ramsar site and to ensure its sustainable development. In addition, through joint research projects, we would like to
contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and ensure the effective management of natural resources in our area.

Our goal is to find partners for this call. Project activities can be related to the transfer of knowledge, studies, preparation of plan development and management, twinning, networking, legal framework, …

    Dear Renata,
I am the director of the Authority for Parks and Biodiversity of Romagna (eastern part of Emilia-Romagna Region, Northern Italy). We manage one natural park, three natural reserves, one protected landscape, 12 SCI and 4 SPA, about 500 hectares of public forests.

We are very interested in your project idea and we have a good experience in European cooperation projects, as you can see in your form I compiled, that I will send you with an e-mail.

I am asking if you are still looking for partners from Italy.

The staff is experienced in managing and participating to international cooperation projects (LIFE, IPA, ITA-SLO, South East, Central Europe), because both me and the responsible of communication were employed of the Province of Ravenna, the first (working as manager of the Protected Areas Office) collaborating, the second working directly in the staff of the European Policy Department, with good experience in cooperation projects.

Thank you very much for your attention.

    Best regards,

    Francesca La Greca

    Dear Renata,
The Regional Natural Park Authority of Capanne di Marcarolo manages 9.542,44 ha of mountain Apennine area overlooking the Ligurian Sea, appointed by the European Union as a Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Area. It is a unique area of transition between the south side, the Mediterranean one, which shows the influence of the marine environment, and the north side, the continental one, colder and wetter. This feature creates different habitats, hosting flora and fauna species belonging to both districts. Flora, for example, has a high proportion of endemic species (for example Cerastium utriense, Viola bertolonii).
Particular attention is devoted to the management of grassland habitat and pasture grass, the maintenance of which is vital for biodiversity and the economy of the protected area, together with the species that live in these environments, especially butterflies protected by the European Community, such as Euphydryas a. provincialis, bats and some birds.
Since the 60s of last century, due to the abandonment of the mountain, these important areas have progressively reduced because of the advance of forest vegetation, and so the species associated with them. The restoration, in addition to being a necessary condition for the landscape and essential for the maintenance and promotion of agricultural and pastoral activities, is provided for by the Park Plan and the implementing rules of the European Directive 92/43/CEE “Habitat”. The protected area is in fact included in the Sites of Community Importance (SCI and SPA) for the Mediterranean biogeographical region.
In this sense, we believe that the title of the project that you proposed “Conservation of natural ecosystems and enhancing its economic value for supporting sustainable use of regional resources and enhancement of ecosystem services” suits perfectly the reality of protected area and in general to the Apennines territories of southern Piedmont, bordering Liguria.
The park is in fact committed to developing policies of land management that could ensure the preservation of high values of biodiversity and the preservation and promotion of sustainable economic activities. Grazing, in particular, if well managed can allow the maintenance or restoration of open environments, essential to many species of flora and fauna of Community interest. Apennine grazing areas, reduced and controlled, can then be an element of biodiversity conservation.
The Park Authority, as part of European funding (ERDF) for the Rural Development Plan 2007/2013, Measure 323, has implemented rehabilitation and improvement of habitats of community interest and management and conservation of vegetable and animal species. In particular, one of the implemented actions concerns the preparation of Site Conservation Measures specifically related to prairie grass and pastures, with the drafting of an agronomic plan integrated with the issues of conservation of habitats and species and of ecosystem function. The planning involved entities, associations and residents and was implemented with the help of participatory decision-making procedure EASW, in collaboration with the Eastern Piedmont University.
As from January 2016 the Park of Capanne di Marcarolo will assume a new role, decided by the Piedmont Region, as “Entity for Management of Protected Apennine Areas “, which will be enhanced to the objectives of knowledge, enhancement and management of biodiversity issues and recovery of habitats in relation to the strengthening of capabilities and diversification of ecosystem resources. In this way we enter our proposal for joining your Interreg Med project, that is the extension of studies on the environmental components and involvement of the territories of the Apennine Mountains overlooking the Ligurian Sea. The Park Authority works for these activities with the University of Turin, which, if deemed useful, may also participate on Interreg Med.

    NAIS
    Participant

    Dear Renata,

NAIS, an Italian SME, has a long experience in Research projects including a special focus in maritime applications.

In particular NAIS has been leading the MEDUSE FP7 project: Marine Park Enhanced applications based on the use of integrated GNSS (http://www.nais-solutions.it/2014/04/meduse-marine-park-enhanced-applications-based-on-use-of-integrated-gnss/)

After the MEDUSE experience, NAIS is currently promoting CALIPSO, an operational system dedicated on to the Marine Protected Areas while at the same time sharing information to the tourists and yachtsmen through its mobile app available on the major app stores.
    Please also visit: http://www.nais-solutions.it/products/calipso/

The service has just started last summer and we believe that your proposal could benefit by the utilization of a common IT tool at Mediterranean level. Furthermore we can propose the participation of Marine Parks that we have involved so far.
On the other hand NAIS will benefit from a wide benchmark test with users and further customizations if needed by the Project.

    Best Regards,
    Gianluca Gargiulo
