Serres is the capital of the prefecture of Serres with a rich historic and cultural background. Geographically is located in Northern Greece and is the second largest city of the Region of Central Macedonia (76,430 inhabitants according to 2011 census) as well as the largest regional urban center of Central Macedonia. The city of Serres constitutes the focal point of development in the region. The Municipality of Serres acts as a pole of development of the wider region as well as a cross-border cooperation center, capitalizing on its location, population size, growth potential and transnational initiatives.
The Municipality of Serres, Central Macedonia, Greece, would very much like to participate in projects of the 2nd call of the MED Programme 2014-2020 related to the following issues:
1)Development of new shared and sustainable agro-business models in Mediterranean areas.

Given the fact that the wider region of Serres is an agricultural and livestock area, the Municipality of Serres is engaged to promote the modernisation of agricultural holdings; the quality of agricultural production and products; and support business creation and development. In an effort to better understand how the public sector can support smallholder integration in value chains, new agro-business models are sought, on order to: identify the critical success factors for improving supplier-buyer trade falling under different contexts and market structures; analyse the inter-organizational linkages between producers and buyers; identify where value can be added, costs reduced and efficiency improved. The overall aim is to contribute to a sustainable development of the region, investing in a sector, which is growing across Europe to meet rising consumer demand.

    2) Energy efficiency in public buildings is a major issue in the region, which the Municipality is located in and would like to tackle it.
    3) Protection against natural hazards. Due to its location, we often encounter with sudden and destructive climatic events and the associated problems of floods and hydrogeological instability that, in recent years, seem to have multiplied their strength, creating, thus, serious problems for the urban population but especially for the rural areas inhabitants.
    4) Sustainable development – local agriculture. Given the fact that the wider region of Serres is an agricultural and livestock area, the Municipality of Serres is well aware that local agriculture and short food supply chains have economic, social and cultural benefits for farmers, consumers and rural areas in general, which the Municipality is engaged to promote, with the perspectives of the modernisation of agricultural holdings; quality of agricultural production and products and support for business creation and development; strengthening of the rural-urban linkages; generating a network of international trade to ensure the placement of the production. The aim is to contribute to a sustainable development of the region, investing on a sector, which is growing across Europe to meet rising consumer demand.
