XYLO Project
2nd call Program MED
Integrated project on the specific objective 1.1 in green sectorThe project aims to consolidate sustainable local forest and wood sectors, playing an important role in the development of the rural areas of the cooperation area (biodiversity, economic wealth, social welfare) by proposing a program of actions that stimulates development Of business networks to achieve the objectives of green growth by taking advantage of good practices and complementary experiences gained in the area of cooperation. The originality of the project is to consider the diversity of production sectors (timber production, cork production, wood energy production), to plan thematic actions as well as a transversal capitalization on the themes of Improvement of competitiveness and quality in the broad sense (certification of products, companies, sustainable management of resources).
CHALLENGE: Protecting / Valuing the resources of the Mediterranean forest and “maquis” and promoting the quality of life and attractiveness of rural and mountain areas
OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To increase the competitiveness of rural and mountain enterprises that value wood resources and products and quality in a broad sense (sustainable resource management, quality of products, production systems and value chains).
ACHIEVEMENTS:
i) exchange of experiences, studies, sharing of possible innovations
(ii) common and coordinated regional policies, training for decision makers and enterprises
(iii) concrete actions for quality production, business support, innovative services, ….
iv) validation of the produced results
v) Capitalization of results, dissemination, communicationThe concrete actions implemented, the dissemination of good practices, the improvement of regional policies will contribute positively to economy, employment, mitigation of climate change and maintenance of biodiversity in the MED zone.
APPROACH: cooperation between various organizations (institutions, research, companies, etc.) based on various innovative clusters of the various countries and regions (Var and Corsica for France, Tuscany and Sardinia for Italy).We are looking for partners from Spain, Portugal and Greece that could represent the core partnership (that’s to say representative of State or Region on NUTS 1 or NUTS 2 level). We would appreciate that the partner could bring a partners network from its region with competences in research, governance and business.

Representing the Municipality of Skyros Island (www.skyros.gr), Greece, as its technical consultant and EU programs responsible person, I hereby inform you about our interest in your project.
Skyros island is 40% covered by pine tree forests. Our municipality is the owner of almost 90% of this forest (6.845he) and also responsible for the forest administration. One of our main policies focus on action plans which could facilitate our forest economy in a sustainable way.
Our Municipality is also coordinating LIFE09 NAT/GR/000323 project (LIFE+ Biodiversity) which aims to establish integrated planning methods and management capable of enhancing biodiversity whilst remaining compatible with sustainable economic and social development.
