What is proposed?
A project proposal under “Priority axis 3: Protecting and promoting Mediterranean natural and cultural resources”, with the Title “Seasonal variation of waste as an effect of tourism” and the Acronym “Blue islands”, dealing with seasonal variation of waste management and recycling in touristic areas and especially in islands.
Proposal’s Objective
The main objective is to elaborate effective, economic and environment friendly solutions for waste prevention and promotion of separate collection and recycling of waste in islands, taking into consideration the seasonal variation of waste as an effect of tourism.
• by Networking: Building a cross-Med network of islands with statutory (constitutional) scope to establish a more effective system for waste management and recycling.
• and exchange of practices: Focus in synergies mechanisms, thematic communities and clusters.
Why this project?
The policy innovations introduced by the Smart Specialisation approach are putting significant pressure on regional programming authorities to adapt to new procedures, new approaches, new stakeholders, and new policy processes. This is where the contribution of Territorial Cooperation programmes such as MED comes in. Blue Islands addresses this issue by integrating the results of several previous projects dealing with waste management a into a coherent policy model. There are more than 1.500 islands in the Mediterranean area. Furthermore, islands tend to attract tourism which piles further pressure on the environment, especially on the waste management infrastructure. As a result, the European Commission focuses on waste management on islands. So, in the relevant EU Legislation and in the relevant EU Policy Initiatives there are several provisions for waste management and recycling on islands.
How it will be structured?
All MED 2014-2020 projects must follow one of these modules of 12/18 months:
Module 1: Studies / Common strategies
Module 2: Action plans / Transnational experimentation / Local transfer
Expected outcomes
• Establish a model for anticipating the seasonal waste production
• Integrate the environment in social and economic development;
• Protect the environment and coastal zones through prevention and reduction of pollution
• Strengthen cohesion among Mediterranean islands
• Capacity building of national and local bodies
• Increase the sustainability of tourism in coastal regions

caisse de développement de la CorseHello
The Corsican Developement fund ( Caisse de Développement de la Corse) is a financial institution with public and private fundings whose main shareholders are the Region of Corsica, the French Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations and various financial corporations.
In conjunction with regional, national and European public policies, our primary concern is about accelerating an inclusive, smart and sustainable growth for the island.
By allowing better access to bank financing for small and medium-sized enterprises, we support investments and, in the end, job creations in productive sectors of Corsica such as tourism, agro-food industry or else renewable energies. We can share objective to elaborate effective economic solutions for waste prevention and promotion of separate collection and recycling of waste in islands, especially for SME involved in tourism, which represents 60% of our customers.
Our aim is to support setting up or development of businesses led by small or medium-sized enterprises willing to promote green and blue growth.
By proposing original financial tools, we can improve access to bank financing for small and medium-sized enterprises in the cooperation zone, with a special attention for island issues.
Best Regards
