Expected results:
– Territorial assessment procedures and classification of sensitive areas in the MED framework
– Improved Management policies on protected areas including touristic exploitation constraints
– Sustainable economic development strategies in case study context and “Touristic Chains Development Action Plans”
Improved cooperation and joint planning for the development of a sustainable and responsible coastal and maritime tourism.
Result indicator: Level of sustainability of tourism in MED coastal regions.

Abstract

Tourism development through Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and in the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) represent an opportunity to enhance the regional development policies in a sustainable way for the whole Mediterranean Basin. The idea is to develop operative tools in order to connect the attractiveness of the coastal zone to the cultural and environmental richness of the internal areas according to a design of integrated touristic chain.
The study of touristic dynamics and of the way in which touristic activities are developed in these areas is a relevant component of regional development in MED areas. From these factors, the project intends to investigate the impacts of tourism on environmental, cultural and economic development, defining new strategies and plans, avoiding sectoral approaches and promoting a sustainable and efficient exploitation of cultural and environmental resources. Operatively the project aims to study and experiment new forms of integration of touristic chains connecting coastal areas to inland protected areas through the definition of innovative management solutions and the involvement of the private sector as well as public and local communities.
Study and testing activities are pointed at enhance the attractiveness of territories that include unexploited and underutilized protected areas and cultural heritage sites and to produce effective pilot projects on the side of touristic supply system.
The fragility of protected areas and the dynamic equilibrium of the boundary between land and sea require the definition of a strategy for the management and promotion of environmental resources to carefully maintain ecosystem services and biodiversity. Territorial planning and site-specific regulations (park plans, regulations of MPAs, management plans for Natura 2000 Network), their mutual integration and related participatory processes to decision-making have a key role in reaching integrated goals of preservation and promotion of sensitive areas.

The study will focus on defining and designing a new supply management system, which will reduce the conflicts between the various competing interests (economic, environmental, cultural and social) producing effective benefits for local communities and touristic operators. Involved stakeholders will be:
• Institutional subjects with expertise in managing protected areas (MPAs and Natura 2000 coastal sites);
• Subjects working in the following fields:
o receptivity;
o restaurants;
o entertainment;
o leisure time;
o tours and excursion of different types;
o exploitation of the museum system

In addition to economic operators, the project will also involve schools and other public-private cultural centers.

We represent Municipality of Vlora in Albania, which is a local authority . It has under its administration more than 200.000 inhabitants and a considerable territory. Most of it is located along the sea coast by Adriatic and Jonian seas and with a large and rich natural and cultural touristic heritage and resources. For this purpose we find very attractive your proposal and of special interest which fits with the strategies and Work Plan of our institution. We would like very much to be part of this idea and join it as Albanian partner because we have very much commonalities that can be developed further. The Legacy of al-Andalus Andalusian Public Foundation is run by the Regional Government of Andalusia (Spain). Our actions are developed in all Andalusia region. Our main activities are cultural and tourist and we have experience in different European projects (as leaders and partners).
Our Routes, the Routes of El legado andalusí, represents the biggest cultural tourism offer existing today in southern Spain; through an extensive itinerary that includes more than 200 towns, they connect the main capital cities of Andalusia.

The Routes of El legado andalusí were designated in 2004 as Major Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe; From our headquarters at the Pavilion of al-Andalus and Science (Granada, Spain) (4,477m2), the Foundation carries out a good number of didactic activities and workshops to raise awareness on the Foundation’s labour and to promote its Cultural Itineraries and Tourist Routes.
Concerning European Projects, the Foundation has participated as leader or partner in different programs INTERREG IVC, POCTEP, POCTEFEX, GRUNDVIGT, LEONARDO and ENPI-CROSS BORDER COOPERATION. All of them focused on education, culture, tourism and social integration. Nowadays, we are leader of Umayyad project (ENPI-CROSS BORDER COOPERATION):

At Mediterranean level, tourism has often led many countries and regions to develop the industry in a competitive way rather than in a cooperative manner. For obvious climatic reasons but also due the role played by tour operators, Mediterranean tourism destinations have based their growth essentially on a “sun and sea” vision and developed strategies aimed at maximizing short term profits instead of addressing the needs and expectations of customers and residents. In this sense, there is a real need to adopt and introduce new consumer models translated into environmentally friendly tourism products, respecting natural resources and diversifying the seasonal nature of tourism demand. The UMAYYAD project contributes to this objective by promoting sustainable tourism based on the synergies derived from the design of a cross-border itinerary between 6 countries sharing common history and cultural background.

– Sustainable tourism is a vital resource for the Pachino’s territory, also because of the high value the landscape, both coastal and inland, have for our area. It’s one of our main heritage assets to exploit.

– PGI resources produced in our territory are among our key assets for attractivity: vegetables, winery and fisheries. This means of course that the natural environment must be protected also under the perspective of preserving excellent agrifood production.

– Furthermore, the Municipality have already started a project for the reuse of abandonded rail as green transport for eco-friendly tourism.
