Axis 1. INNOVATION: PROMOTING MEDITERRANEAN INNOVATION CAPACITIES TO DEVELOP SMART AND SUISTAINABLE GROWTH
Specific Objective 1: to increase transnational activity of innovative clusters and networks of key sectors of the MED areaLooking for partners interested in being actively involved in the proposal.
Project proposal: FOSTERING GREEN-GROWTH IN MED AGROFOOD CLUSTERS: GREEN-FOOD
Green growth is defined as fostering economic growth and development, while sustaining the natural assets base that provides the resources and environmental services on which our well-being relies. Regarding green-growth, the agro- food sector is a major user of natural resources and a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution. The agricultural sector faces challenges in adapting to an economic environment oriented towards green growth. With projected demand of agro-food products expected to grow strongly, agriculture has to continue to increase productivity, economise on the use of increasingly scarce resources and adapt to climate change. At the same time, it needs to be able to contribute to improving environmental quality.
A green-growth strategy for the food and agriculture sector aims to ensure that enough food is provided, efficiently and sustainably, for growing population. This means increasing production, while managing efficiently scare natural resources, such as water; reducing the carbon intensity and adverse environmental impacts throughout the food chain; enhancing the provision of environmental services, such as carbon sequestration, flood and drought control; and conserving biodiversity (OECD, 2011c).
In terms of strategic objectives and working areas, green growth in the agriculture sector covers a wide range of subjects, energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energies, reducing GHG, waste management and revaluing,…
Although common and specific policies has been developed and implemented through EU and member states, there is a huge way towards green economy in agricultural sector.
GREENFOOD project propose to use synergies on MED countries main agrofood clusters to foster innovation and promote green-growth common strategies through cooperative work between agro-food and energy clusters in the different regions.

Adam PisulaDear Guadalupe.
My name is Adam Pisula. On the Interreg MED forum I have seen your partner search announcement for the project regarding the Fostering Green-growth in Agrifood MED clusters project. I am writing to you on behalf of El Ejido City Council in order to express our interest as a partner for the project promoted by your entity. I know that the deadline is approaching quickly, therefore if you are still looking for partners I would like to provide you with relevant information as fast as possible.
Could you please send me more detailed description of your project, together with partner form where I could present our City Council in details? We have been aware of your project proposal, thus we would like to express our interest on joining it. At this respect we would like gather more information concerning the project idea, such as main objectives, main activities, the estimated overall and partner’s budget and other partners you aim to include in this project. Also, we would be really grateful if you could indicate the duration and possible start date…
Below you can find briefly description about City Council.
El Ejido is a municipality located on the southern province of Almería, It has an extension of 227 km², formed by 14 towns with a population of 84. 144 inhabitants (2014). El Ejido is the third most populated municipality in the province of Almería.
El Ejido has a sub desert Mediterranean climate characterized by low rainfall and a long number of hours of sunshine per year and soft temperatures.
Originally, their drylands were used only for rain fed crops but after the exploitation of local water resources, irrigated crops became majority, especially with horticultural crops in greenhouses. This caused a change not only on the value of the land but also on the landscape.
The industrial agriculture is the base of the economy of El Ejido. The 67, 45% of agricultural land is used as irrigated land and the 21% of the land are natural areas, thanks to the natural reserve “Punta Entinas-Sabinar”. These zones are under a high pressure because of the greenhouse’s agriculture and the construction of housing development.
About environmental care, because of the urban life as well as agriculture farming, there are a high number of agents of pollution. The city council is developing a plan of sustainability in order to promote the economic development in a sustainable way in the municipality, preserving the environment and maximizing the use of natural resources, example of them are the PMUS, the creation of an Eco-point, the program of urban sustainability and projects as “City 21”, “Agenda 21” and the “Andalusian Bike Plan”.
The Municipality of El Ejido is extremely interested in using synergies on MED countries main agro-food clusters to foster innovation and promote green-growth common strategies through cooperative work between agro-food and energy clusters in the different regions, which is the topic of your project.
We would be delighted to have a possibility to take a part in your project team. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
