SUSWET – Changing to sustainable agro-ecosystems to protect wetland biodiversity
Small, temporally dynamic and biologically diverse wetlands are among the most
endangered ecosystems. One of the major causes of wetland degradation is agricultural
practices specially pollution. However, agriculture is one of the major economically
relevant human activities in the Mediterranean area. The European Commission has a
great interest in transforming agriculture in a more sustainable activity, which will improve
the regional development especially in rural areas. Re-connecting farmers with the agroecosystem
through a sustainable framework is necessary in order to protect specifics
ecosystem such the wetlands that are surrounded by intensive agriculture. There is a lack
of specific assessment tools and indicators to such ecosystems despite their significant
contribution to aquatic biodiversity. In order to develop a more sustainable management
of wetland watersheds, their risk characterization should be evaluated and the strategies
to conserve or restore them should be encompassed to the activities developed on them.
This project aims to develop tools detecting good wetland ecological status by aquatic
community assemblage features and habitat characterization in order to select
rehabilitation strategies that will have greater potential to reduce water pollution. Due to
its relevance on the ecosystem recovery capacity, cryptic biodiversity needs to be included
in the assessment protocols, especially in the temporary ecosystem. Considering the
positive consequences of the social involvement on the project success, the detection of
barriers (social, economical, political) will be carried out together with an educational plan
for increasing societal awareness and moving to changes in famer’s behaviour. Specific
training should also be developed in order to give the skills to introduce those changes. In
addition, the end result sought is to implement new agricultural performance that may
lead to a more sustainable management of agro-ecosystems.CONTACT

G WOLFFDear Mrs Munoz
The topic you have posted is relevant to our concern in the Departement of Herault as we have a a lot of water basins potentially spoiled by chemicals in both vineyards and agricultural sectors.
I don’t know whether I manage to attend the next meeting in Barcelona, but we are interested in protection of wetlands but also lagoons in which a large production of oysters.
