    Intelligent Trawl Solutions through Technology

Call: Interreg Mediterranean 1st Call for Proposals
Priority Axis 3: Protecting and promoting Mediterranean natural and cultural resources
Specific Objective 3.2.: To maintain biodiversity and natural ecosystems through strengthening the management and networking of protected areas

    Project type: M1 + M2 – Studying and testing (36 months)

    Project abstract

This project is based on the premise that multifaceted problems deserve multi-disciplinary approaches. Over the past decades deep sea trawling has impacted various areas of the Mediterranean seabed. Impacts include, but are not limited to, degradation of fish stocks, eradication of marine bio-diversity and damage/destruction of submerged cultural heritage. Due to the nature of this type of fishing, the aforementioned effects of this fishing activity are, to date, largely unknown.

A number of key experts from diverse disciplines have been brought together to work towards intelligent methodologies aimed at economical and effective ways to record, measure and monitor the impacts that trawl fishing has on natural and cultural aspects of the seabed. Results from planned activities will provide information on which intelligent solutions can be developed.

Throughout the project, fieldwork will also be used to cross-train personnel working in diverse fields related to the protection and management of marine assets. Training in the use of digital sonar mapping, the implementation of underwater 3D photogrammetry as well as the measurement of marine biodiversity will ensure that participants will benefit from project activities in a personal and professional manner. Such benefits will then be shared with colleagues in their home countries.

Likewise, protocols and methodologies developed in the context of this project will serve as baseline studies which in turn can be used to help nurture ‘best practices’ in other Mediterranean countries. This is especially true for disadvantaged Mediterranean countries who share the Mediterranean as a common space with their southern-European neighbours.

    Hallo,
I’m writing on behalf of municipality of Vibo Valentia, We think your project proposal was very interesting for the city and we would like from you to consider us as possible partners.
Vibo Valentia is a city and comune (municipality) in the Calabria region of southern Italy, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital of the province of Vibo Valentia, and is an agricultural, commercial (fishing) and tourist center (the most famous places nearby are Tropea, Ricadi and Pizzo).
In Vibo is located the most important district of Tuna industries.

If you are interesting to involve this partner please contact me

    Dear Sirs:
We would like to indicate our interest to study the possibility of becoming a Portuguese partner of your consortium. Perhaps it will be interesting to join the maritime religious heritage.
Established 1984, the “Departamento do Património Histórico e Artístico da Diocese de Beja” [DPHA] (Department of Historical and Artistic heritage, Catholic Diocesis of Beja) is a pioneer ONG, operating with national, regional and local authorities, in safeguarding the religious heritage. In particular, it is in charge of the cultural heritage of the Beja region, in the South of Portugal, between the Atlantic ocean and the Spanish border. The Diocese of Beja keeps over 200.000 inventoried works of art in churches, monasteries, convents and museums and over 500 buildings.
Among the many areas of work of his team, 12 professional and 214 volunteers, are: inventory of religious cultural goods; ensuring equity for communities and social inclusion; creation of a core of technical advice; churches restoration and re-opening; support for cultural itineraries.
The experience of Beja is particularly relevant in inventories, conservation, publications and development of local communities. The DPHA chose to enlarge its range of activities on heritage and biodiversity in order to involve a wider public. In addition, organizes since 2003 the Festival Terras sem Sombra (FTSS), which aims to become accessible the monuments of Alentejo. This is due to a partnership between the DPHA as well the “dynamic forces” of Alentejo.
The FTSS has an itinerant character and focuses its action on the developing of new audiences and the connection to local communities. Its high international level of the programme is composed by, beyond concerts, master classes, conferences, guides tours and some pedagogic artistic actions. The dialog between the past and the contemporary creation, as well as the opening to young composers and interpreters, the order for works, the intersections among the arts, the rescue of the musicological heritage, are, together, structural elements of the project.
This is the background in which the FTSS shows the relevance of the environmental and cultural value of this territory, presenting one of the best index of preservation in Europe. Each concert is accompanied by a volunteering pilot-action in order to save its biodiversity. The principles of inclusion and sustainability are an integral part of the rules of the FTSS. The concerts and other activities provide open access within the constraints imposed by the preservation of the monuments and the place visited as well.
The “Festival Terras sem Sombra” desires to persuade the whole community to join efforts to obtain a well-balanced and sustained development for Southern Europe.
The International Prize “Terras sem Sombra”, created by the Festival in 2011, is awarded annually to three personalities or institutions that stood out, globally, in the areas of music, cultural heritage and biodiversity preservation.
    Best regards,

    Dear all
I’m Francesca Visintin from eFrame Ltd. We are supplying environmental advisory services. As concern the fishery we have experience in the field of ecosystem services valuation. In case you are going to compare several art of fisheries we are able to compare them taking into acconut the economic impact on the ecosystem considering the gain and losses of the services of that ecosystem.

    Dear madam,

we are Public Institution Nature park Telašćica, most of our protected area is sea. Fishing with trawls is finally forbidden due to the new EU laws and standards, but we do not know the exact data of its impact from previous times. Is it possible to join the project as a Pilot area for testing and studying or participant since we are already partners on other Interreg project? We do monitor some species such as Pina Nobilis, Posidonia Oceanica, we will also introduce monitoring of Red coral and fish stock (we belong to Natura 2000 protected areas) but we would like also to get knowledge (of training in the use of digital sonar mapping, the implementation of underwater 3D photogrammetry as well as the measurement of marine biodiversity of other species). In addition to that one of our activity within management plan is mapping of underwater archaeological sites.
