Interreg MED Programme – Promoting Mediterranean innovation capacities to develop smart and sustainable growth (Priority Axis 1)

Specific Objective: To increase transnational activity of innovation clusters and networks of key sectors of the MED area (Specific Objective 1.1)

Crafts industries have a long-lasting tradition in the Mediterranean basin. Nowadays, they are considered part of its common heritage and protected as such to prevent these traditional works from disappearing, and, thus, preserve the Mediterranean cultural and socio-economic diversity of its territories.

However, the specific needs of these traditional sectors need to be properly addressed in order to overcome the current challenges that they face. In particular, two issues have demonstrated to be crucial as regards their performance and competitiveness in the 21st century: innovation and internationalisation. Additionally, there is a gap between training and the real needs of the companies operating within these traditional sectors —generally speaking “microenterprises” and SMES— especially concerning the use of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) and e-commerce.

Therefore, the aim of the project is twofold: on the one hand, increasing awareness among relevant stakeholders of design-led innovation and the introduction of new ICTs in the traditional sectors as means of differentiation and commercialization in an ever increasing global economy; and, on the other, promoting the culture for innovation among SMEs in the crafts sector to foster self-employment and the internationalization of their products by means of specific ICT training.

We are looking for partners to develop and submit this project idea under the current call of proposals.

    Dear Lucas,
I’m writing to You on behalf of the Associazione Sviluppo Innovazione Ambiente (ASIA), a Not for Profit organisation established in 2000 and officially accredited from 2004 for Vocational Educational Training (VET) from Molise region.
We love your idea-project because the rise in agricultural and handcraft products’ added value from the development, acknowledgement and marketing of the top quality Mediterranean products is a real challenge for the sector in the EU med territories. The quality product alone is not sufficiently enhanced and valorized by integrated actions of strong cooperation for micro and SMEs.
The highly fragmented market doesn’t let smaller entrepreneurs, farmers and agri-tourisms to enjoy the economies of scale in operations and introduce modern equipment proves very expensive.
This constrains the European smaller entrepreneurs towards the risk to fall into a vicious cycle of low risk taking ability > low investment > low productivity > weak market orientation > low value addition > low margin > low ability for risk taking . So there is a need to look for that interventions that can help also the smaller farmers to realize higher level of income and so, contribute to a better social life for rural areas’ inhabitants.
The need is Innovation. Not only in terms of buy technical equipments, but overall to learn to use it in the more efficient way and exchange best practices and expertise.

In the following a veri short presentation of ASIA:
In the 2006 ASIA with the Leonardo Project I.F.D. (Instructor for Driving) has been awarded with others Partners by the “Helsinki Award” for V.Q.T.S., Vocational Qualification Transfer System, for excellent practice in addressing the priorities of the Copenhagen process and promoting an enhanced European co-operation in vocational education and training.
From 2007 ASIA has been officially included with the code 58352WPU (D.P.R. n. 382 of the 11/July/1980) in the “Anagrafe Nazionale Ricerche” (National Register for Research of the Italian Ministry for University and Research).
ASIA is promoting partner in the Rural Development field because is official Member of the LAG (Local Action Group) Consortium ASVIR, grouping 18 Public and Privates Enterprises, Associations, Chambers of Commerce, Regional Agency for Rural Development and Innovation, and Authorities, more than Province and 50 Municipalities operating on the EU LEADER Program.
From 2009 ASIA has been accredited in Italy also by “Fondo Professioni” for Lifelong Learning.
The ASIA’s Quality Management System is certified ISO 9001 from 2002 within sector 37 “Education”.

We would like to be the Italian partner of Your proposal and We would like collaborate in developping this and others

    Provincial Council of Granada

    Dear Lucas,

I write you from the Diputación de Granada (Provincial Council of Granada). We are Local Public Goverment that represents 172 municipalities.

Your project idea fits in several of our lines of work and the needs of our territory.
The business structure of our province is made up of SMEs and most of them are microenterprises. Crafts sector is a key for economy of many of our municipalities, especially linked to tourism activity. It is even more important for our rural areas, which represent most of the surface of the province.

Our institution considers that the creation of clusters is a key tool to support SMEs with processes of innovation and internationalization. Actually, we have recently promoted the creation of some clusters linked to other economic sectors of the province. Ex: Agriculture.

I write you from the Delegation of Employment and Sustainable Development. It includes a department especially devoted to promote creation and consolidation of enterprises. Their users are SMEs and especially microenterprises. Besides this one, the other lines of our work are: Office of European Projects, Training for Employment, Rural Development, Promotion of Agrarian Employment

We have wide experience in the implementation of European projects as leaders and as partners, in most of European Programmes and Initiatives, MED programme among them. We can highlight here the following because of especial connection with your project idea:
-ETNOMED: Increase the potential of common ethnographic heritage in the province of Granada and Northern Morocco, as a resource for sustainable socio-economic development and cultural dialogue. Handicraft was one of the sectors especially targeted by this project. (POCTEFEX Spain – Morocco)
-I4FOOD: Improve the competitiveness of SMEs in the food industry sector (INTERREG IV C)
-MAS-MED: Among its activities, the creation of the agrofood and technological cluster for one of the areas of the province (Local, urban development call funded by EFRD)
-RIDER: Support for innovation in the commercialisation of small companies (INTERREG IV SUDOE)
-WIDE: Promote organisational innovation in microenterprises via cooperation between public and private agents for economic promotion to increase competitiveness (INTERREG IV MED)
-ITERA-AA: Promote innovation in small businesses in the agricultural and agri-food sector (INTERREG IV SUDOE)

Don’t hesitate to contact us in case you may need more information. In such case you can write to: trinim@dipgra.es

    Dear Lucas,

I am writing on behalf of the Center of Albanological Studies, in Tirana. The Center is a public research institution, established by the Government of Albania in August 2007. The center serves as an umbrella for the four national institutes: Institute of Archaeology, Institute of Linguistics and Literature, Institute of History, Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Art Studies, and has also the transversal research unit of Albanian Encyclopedia.

The Center conducts research in the fields of history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, art study, linguistics, literature, etc.. Besides, its work also involves investigation, evaluation, conservation, and promotion of the Albanian cultural inheritance.

We found your idea very interesting, it fits with our expertise and research work and what is more important is highly relevant for Albanian context.

Institute of Cultural Anthropology among other things conducts researches on cultural heritage, involving as well crafts. In addition, it has a very rich fund of ethnographic artifacts collected over years during research expeditions throughout Albania.

Therefore, we are strongly committed to take the advantage that MED Programme offers to carry out such innovative project idea in Albanian ethnography, with special focus on crafts industry.

We would be happy to consider the Center of Albanological Studies as a possible partner in your project idea.
Please contact us for further information at: albanologjia@gmail.com

    Dear Mr. Ruiz,

Greetings from Greece and the North Aegean region. I am contacting you as I was intrigued by the challenge of applying business modelling and design-led innovation in a traditional sector, such as the crafts industry.

The Business School of the University of the Aegean has been actively involved in EU research and consulting projects in innovation management. Our Tourism Management research group is also applying such findings in the fields of tourism, culture and agro-business, through our network of government-agency partners (e.g. Prefecture of North Aegean) and private-sector experts.

If you are looking for a partner in Greece (be it an academic institution or a public-sector agency), we would be glad to hear further details of your idea and help in its shaping.

    Regards,

    Kostas Kutsikos

    Dear all,

Thank you very much for your kind responses and the interest shown in our project idea.

For the time being, we have considered and drafted the activities, implementation plan, estimated budget and the ideal partnership/consortium. As regards the latter, we would like to involve mainly public entities (such as development agencies) and partners having a direct link with SMEs in the crafts industry.

However, we are still defining the final consortium and need a project leader since we cannot submit it by ourselves.

We will contact the potential partners more likely to meet these criteria by private email in the following week, once we have discuss all these elements with the new project leader. And we will keep your contact details and profiles for other projects that we are defining for the forthcoming months.

Thank you again for your interest in this project idea.

    Best regards,

    Lucas Ruiz
