The Association for the Protection and Development of Hymettus was founded in 1992 and is the largest and the most active Association of the Country. It is a legal entity of public law and operates under the Local Government Law. Decisions are taken by the Administrative Council of the Association, which empowers the Executive Committee for their implementation.

The Assosiation consists of 11 municipalities: Agia Paraskevi, Papagou-Holargos, Zografou, Kaisariani, Vyronas, Ilioupolis, Greek-Argyroupolis, Glyfada, Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, Koropi, Peania.

The population living in the area covered by the 11 municipalities exceeds 1,000,000 people, while indirectly or directly affects the life of the entire urban network of Athens, with over 4,000,000 inhabitants, exerting considerable influence on the region’s microclimate.

    Purposes
The protection of the suburban forest ecosystem of Mount Hymettus, from natural and anthropogenic causes and the improvement of the respective ecosystem and the environment in general by undertaking growth measures, relevant actions and initiatives at national and international level.

Furthermore, the Association supports all actions towards filling the gap of cooperation between the central government municipalities and the social services. Consequently, the Association is the only body able to plan actions on the entire forest ecosystem of Hymettus and the members – Municipalities, with a purely environmental content. It also implements interventions to facilitate and enhance education, sports, tours, cultural heritage and tourism throughout the region.

Finally, Hymettus is a suburban forest ecosystem, which ends in the sea, hosts rich flora and fauna, has outstanding natural beauty spots and cultural monuments, monasteries and churches, caves, etc.

Due to the value of forest habitats, Mount Hymettus is subject to a protection regime pursuant to European Directive 92/43/EEC “On the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora” and its respective amendments, and has been incorporated to the NATURA 2000 network under the title “OROS YMITTOS” (GR 3000015), Law 3937/31-03-2011.

    Activities
    • Creation and maintenance of protection infrastructures (fire and flood protection for the neighboring urban areas). Specifically: water tanks, forest roads, road signs, observatories etc.
    • Protection and preservation of the forest: anticorrosion projects, diseases treatment, planting, reforestation, irrigation, etc.
    • Enhancing the volunteers’ network with equipment (vehicles patrolling and firefighting, communications, uniforms and other specific equipment, etc.)
    • Promotion of Hymettus as a destination for a variety of mild activities for the Attica Basin residents. The objective by supporting the necessary infrastructure is to increase the visitors flow.
    • Raising awareness of citizens for the protection of the nature and the environment, by focusing on school education (traveling exhibition for schools, educational material, campaigns voluntary interventions, etc.)
    • Participation in national and international networks, conferences, initiatives and co-financed programs
